Smuttynose earns business award
PORTSMOUTH — Representatives of Smuttynose Brewing Co. traveled to Manchester recently to receive a prestigious business award given by the New Hampshire Business Review.
Citing the company’s commitment to community, sustainable business practices and quality products, an independent jury convened by the news weekly awarded the craft brewery its Excellence in Business Award in the Manufacturing Category. Since its founding in 1993, Smuttynose Brewing has established a reputation for community service. Its principals, Joanne Francis and Peter Egelston, serve on a number of local and statewide boards, including The Music Hall, Taste of the Nation, the Currier Museum and the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation.
In addition, the brewery has sponsored a variety of popular local events, including the Portsmouth Criterium and the Telluride by the Sea Film Festival.
Smuttynose recently received another accolade on a broader stage as well when it was included among Rate Beer’s Top 100 Brewers in the World, a list that represents the top 1.7 percent of the 5,836 breweries considered.
Having outgrown the “microbrewery” category last year, Smuttynose Brewing expects to finish this year with growth approaching 20 percent, a pace it has maintained for four years running. Keeping up with that growth poses one of the greatest challenges for the small brewery.
Earlier this summer, it added a second 6,000-gallon fermenter and has ordered another one from a fabricator in Oregon for delivery next spring.
